Volunteering In Your Local Community

Melbourne’s outer North and West are wonderful places to live, but it’s not just the excellent lifestyle opportunities that make these such great communities – it’s the people that live and work locally! Whether you’re new to the area and would like to meet new people, or you’ve got some spare time and would simply like to give back, today we highlight some local organisations that you can give your time to.
Volunteer West
Volunteer West is a community organisation that operates across the entire Western Metropolitan Region of Melbourne. The team at Volunteer West work to match people with the volunteering opportunities that best complement their time and skills, ensuring they are volunteering in areas where they will be of greatest benefit to the community. As a true representation of Melbourne’s west, Volunteer West are particularly talented at sourcing opportunities where people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds can thrive. So, sharpen your skills and get involved here.
Country Fire Authority
The Country Fire Authority (CFA) is a volunteer firefighting and emergency services organisation particularly valuable in Melbourne’s outer northern suburbs during the summer months. There are lots of volunteering opportunities roles at the CFA, including some for junior volunteers. If you’re aged 11 to 15, you can join the Junior Volunteers program, which includes firefighting drills, first aid training, community service and other activities. If you’re over 16, you can become a regular volunteer, which can involve firefighting and emergency management, and support roles such as fundraising and community education.
Clean Up Australia
Clean Up Australia works with communities to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment – this one is perfect for local green thumbs! Clean Up Australia Day happens annually, which may be an excellent first step! For our keen volunteers living in Melbourne’s outer north there are plenty of organised clean ups to become a part of, such as Clean Up Highland Lake, Craigieburn and Clean Up Laurimar Wetlands, Doreen. For our westies, Clean Up Cambridge Reserve, Hoppers Crossing or Clean Up Wyndham Park, Werribee are both great options. There are plenty more events on the Clean Up Australia website, or you can even create your own!
Community Support Organisations
The Australian Red Cross, The Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul Society and Brotherhood of Saint Laurence are just a few of the local community support organisations that would highly appreciate your time and skills. Whether you’re interested in tutoring high school children, visiting older people in the community, gardening, sorting clothing donations, or working in an emergency services volunteer team – there’s sure to be a role perfect for you at one of these important organisations.
By volunteering your time and skills to a local organisation, you’ll be making a wonderful difference in our community and may make some great new local friends in the process! The Aston Homes team wish you the very best in your efforts. We know you’ll be a great help.
