As you commence your home-building journey, you’re bound to come across the Victoria Building Authority’s 6-Star Energy Standard. It sounds pretty impressive, doesn’t it. But what is the 6-Star Energy Standard and how can you achieve it? Today, we answer these questions and more in the latest Aston Homes blog.
What is the 6-Star Energy Standard?
In Victoria, each new home, renovation, alteration or building addition needs to comply with the Energy Efficiency requirements in the National Construction Code – this includes complying with the Victoria Building Authority’s (VBA) 6-Star Energy Standard. The 6-Star Standard is an energy rating that considers the thermal performance of a new home, renovation or addition. Ultimately, it assesses the amount of energy required to heat and cool the home. The higher the star rating, the less energy consumed by the building.
What is assessed?
There are several design features that can contribute to the energy rating of a home. The following are some of the most common:
– The layout and orientation of the home
– The materials used in the construction of the roof, walls, windows and floor
– The size/positioning of the windows
– Solar hot water
– Recycled water
– Water tank
– Ratio of glass to brick in the home
– Ceiling height
– Insulation in walls and ceiling
– How the building materials suit the local climate
How can you achieve the 6-Star Energy Standard?
Meeting the 6-Star Standard is simple – it’s all about good design! Communicating to your builder early on, that you want to achieve a high standard of energy efficiency in your new home is a great place to start.
