Better On A Bicycle: Cycling Melbourne’s Outer Suburbs

Cycling Melbourne’s Outer Suburbs

If you’re tired of spending hours in traffic and are looking for an active alternative, perhaps jumping on your bike and taking the road less travelled is the answer. In today’s blog we look at why Melbourne’s outer suburbs are the ideal place to buckle up your helmet, jump on your bike, and get those peddles pumping!

Great Amenities

Whether you are a confident rider or just starting out, you’ll be glad to know that there are kilometers of beautiful, brand new bike paths across the new-build communities in Melbourne’s north and west. You can find some wonderful tracks in Northern Melbourne here and Western Melbourne here. These tracks avoid traffic hotspots and pass through popular picnic areas, playgrounds and parklands – perfect for taking your four-legged friend with you! If you’re looking to change-up your work commute, most of our local train stations have bike parking facilities plus PSOs patrolling for added security. Some stations even have Parkiteer bike cages that provide undercover, free and secure bike parking. Learn more here.

Social Cycling

Riding with company is a great way to explore Melbourne’s outer suburbs while making new friends. If you’re looking to connect with other riders, we recommend joining Bicycle Network. Bicycle Network is Australia’s biggest bike riding organisation, with more than 50,000 members nationwide. They organise events, meet-ups and can even help you out with advice on equipment and servicing. If you’re looking to start a little smaller, local organisation On Yer Bike have some great social groups across Melbourne. Find them here.

Environmental Perks

More people on bikes means less people in cars, which means huge perks for the local environment. Think less smog, less noise pollution and better health to share. Bike riding uses minimal fossil fuels and is a pollution-free mode of transport, so jumping on your bike is a great way to do your part.

Health and Fitness

Not only is bike riding cheap, fun, easy and convenient, it’s one of the healthiest ways to get around. Because it is considered to be quite low impact (unless you’re a regular at the BMX park) cycling can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from young children to older adults. Jumping on a bike gives you a great work out, helping to protect you from serious diseases such as stroke, cardiovascular disease, some cancers, diabetes, obesity and arthritis. It’s also great for clearing the mind after a stressful day!
